Morning in Hull
Kids on the sidewalk skipping to the school bus with backpacks and lunch pails swinging. Soup bones simmering on the stove where a tea kettle lightly whistles. Ellen DeGeneres on TV in the living room where my mother is resting. Anxious cat sprints across the kitchen floor interrupting my stocking footed step. Workmen scale the roof with ladders, put the final touches on the walk-in-shower bathroom my brother added on. Planes from Logan drone in the distance. Last night’s roasting pan waits in the sink to be scrubbed. Laundry to fold. Pharmacy to call. Shopping list to finish. These are my days.

My mom had a mild stroke in October and was in rehab for a month. She just got home Wednesday and I came to be her 24 hour support for the first 2 1/2 weeks and to help my sisters get a care plan in place. I’ll be here for Thanksgiving but Joe is back in VA. When I was here in June helping out in the same way it was a back fracture caused by osteoporosis. Before that it was shingles! Poor woman. xo

oh, colleen, i am SOOO sorry to hear this. she has had quite a time, hasn’t she? bless her heart. i am so glad you can be there with her and that she is recovering well enough to be back home now! i understand the challenges you girls face. my sister and i have been there with mother and soon will be there with our dad. enjoy the time you have. i miss my mother so very much. i have been feeling very sad as thanksgiving approaches because it is a time of year i always counted on spending extended time with her.

It’s the tiniest of little things that make a life. Love how you’ve taken a moment to write and record a few of them.
