When Chickens Forget How to Cross the Road
I was wrong last week when I titled a blog entry Last Chance to Post Pictures of Snow. I was premature when I took the photo of the red-breasted nuthatch on icy tree branches down from my Facebook Timeline header and replaced it with bright spring flowers.
The snowfall yesterday caught everyone off guard. I was alerted to how much had actually accumulated by the sound of our chickens squawking outside. It was late in the afternoon and they couldn’t find the gate that led to their cozy straw-bale coop. This brave Speckled Sussex huddled up against the trunk of a tree for cover, halfway between the porch she had taken refuge under and the coop.
I couldn’t entice this stranded Aracana with a bowl of cooked rice to make her way to the coop. She nervously tried to find solid ground in a sea of cold white while the other chickens complained from under the porch. Eventually Joe came home and carried each one home where they have remained since.

This winter just won’t quit, will it? Poor dear Chickens. Thank God Joe was able to carry them back to safety and warmth…!

Poor chickens! Looks like you and Anita both got hit yesterday. Thankfully, no snow in the forecast here.
