Are You Ready for Your Close-up?
Floyd: The Hollywood of the Blue Ridge. After working on his second independent film shot in Floyd, that’s what Floyd Countian Jason Gallimore calls it. First it was horror thriller, now a romantic comedy (both produced by two different film production companies).
I stopped by Oddfella’s Cantina, where some of the movie scenes are set, to check out the latest shoot scoop and got invited to be an extra. I had to decline because I knew my stamina wouldn’t hold up for all those waits, takes and lighting changes. “Movie Time makes Floyd Time look fast,” said Melodie Pouge, our Chamber of Commerce Director who was acting as assistant to Jason’s producer.
The film is called Geographically Desirable and is about a career woman from the city who comes to Floyd after inheriting her uncle’s house and a dog. From what I could tell, she meets some artist types, falls in love with Floyd, and hits it off with the owner of Oddfella’s (an actor, not Kerry Underwood). Sounds like a real Floyd story to me.
So I did what I do, took some pictures and notes. Look for a story and photos in this week’s Floyd Press. HERE’S the one that Wanda Combs, the paper’s editor wrote for the October 3rd issue. And HERE is the update: the Jamboree recreation story I wrote for the paper.

Even films are being made in Floyd!!! Amazing! You were wise to turn down being an “extra”….lots of sitting around and waiting—and for what? lol! But the premise of the film sounds very interesting.
