The 13 Meet-up
1. Mary Poppins: parasol or umbrella?
2. “Don’t expect the mirror to smile first.” – A’Court Bason
3. It was like an invasion. There were blow-up aliens everywhere at the Cirque du Floyd over the weekend.
4. I haven’t followed the news in a week, since my sister and her husband have been here on vacation. I don’t really feel any better, just less informed.
5. The week was highlighted with a waterfall cascade, a circus parade, Hahn garden blooms, a tea room, a street jamboree and a brewery. There was a pond full of koi fish and a lake to swim in, butterflies on joe pye weed and long neck ducks to feed. See HERE.
6. “It’s a big ballgame,” Wade said about life in Nashville, but she’s being well taken care of. – From Local Musician Called Up to the Big Leagues, my news story on Floyd’s own Morgan Wade who is opening for Lee Ann Womack in October HERE.
7. The Invasion: A milky way of dust / makes morning constellations / on a nebula of light / beaming through my bedroom window / like thousands of parachutes / abandoning ship / they spin down in torrential orbits / landing on dressers / the bookcase and chair / setting up colonies / to plague me
8. Psychological projection is a defense mechanism in which the human ego defends itself against unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others. For example, a person who is habitually rude may constantly accuse other people of being rude. It incorporates blame shifting. – From the Wikipedia
9. I was so affected by my brothers Jim and Dan’s deaths in 2001, that I felt like I had been abducted by aliens. I found myself looking for others who had also been abducted so I wouldn’t feel so strange and alone. – From a 2006 blog post called Bridging the Grief Gap HERE.
10. I think of the first line in a poem like I think of a diving board.
11. I’ve been researching the poetry of Alice Oswald because I’m enthralled with this poem (which I can’t find in print). Listening, I was reminded of when a friend’s marriage ended and she said, “I’m want to be with women now.” I’ve been looking for a woman poet to love because all my favorite poets are men. I wonder, is this her?
12. I found Alice Oswald after reading this quote by her: “At eight, I made a commitment to poetry. Until then, I thought I’d be a policeman. But I went a whole night without sleeping, and the next day the world had changed. It needed a different language.”
13. I just said this to my sister Trish: “I’d rather have a hermit than chocolate.”

Every so often I go without news for a few days to get my equilibrium back.
I think Mary Poppins’ main prop is an umbrella and she doesn’t say no to a pretty parasol.
Your poem says it precisely. The colonies are multiplying in our house as I write.
#10 is a great metaphor. I love swimming, but have a fear of diving because I hit my head on the bottom of the pool when I was first learning to dive. I really need to get over that. Same with writing.
What the name of your new pal?

I think I’ll call him Al, short for Alien or as in ‘What’s it all about Alfie.’ Unless the grandsons want to name him They’ll be meeting him tomorrow.
