13: Grist for the Mill
1. Peek-a-boo or cuckoo?
2. Laugh-In or Hollywood Squares?
3. When it rains, it knocks my corn over.
4. Since my brother and wife have been here, I haven’t been working in the garden, so my fingernails are clean for the first time all summer.
5. Mabry Mill in Floyd County is one of the most photographed places in the country. It was still in use, grinding grain for pancake flour, for the first decade of my life in Virginia.
6. My mother worked for years in Hingham as a waitress at Ye Olde Mill Grille, an old Hingham grain mill turned restaurant that dates back to 1643. My older sister Kathy worked there too, and met her husband there. My brothers washed dishes there when they were in high school. It’s currently called The Liberty Grille. Here is my last visit at the Grille when I was in town for Kathy’s funeral in 2015.
7. The proverb “grist for the mill” means everything can be made useful, or be a source of profit. We can make something positive out of anything that comes along.
8. Out of work actors go on reality shows or Dancing with the Stars. Back in the day, they went on game shows like Hollywood Squares
9. “They broke my heart and they killed me, but I didn’t die. They tried to bury me, they didn’t realize I was a seed.” ― Sinead O’Connor, after the backlash of ripping up the pope’s picture on TV.
10. Passage Meditation: Focused attention / Deep cultivation / Every word is a seed / to be planted – Colleen
11. “All cultures and people turn to poetry during times of celebration, transformation and challenge – those times when ordinary language cannot carry meaning beyond our understanding.” Joy Harjo
12. “My teacher used to ask, “How far do you want to go in your meditation?” My ego would reply, “All the way! Total enlightenment!” It took me years to see that he was testing me. Going all the way around the world is not so impressive if what you’re looking for lies in the town where you were born. Knowing how far to go really means knowing how to be in tune with your own destiny. Paul Weinfield
13. Waiting for a meteorite to shoot across the sky is like waiting for a blind date to show up. Our date for a peak show is August 12 after midnight. I got my front row seat already planted in my yard.
