The Ghost of 13 Thursday
1. I used to sign my kid’s Christmas presents SANTA and change my handwriting so they wouldn’t guess it was me. When they got older I signed them SANTA MARIA just for the fun of it.
2. I was recently typing “5 O’clock” and found myself wondering if it was Irish time.
3. I don’t know who could ever fill Oprah’s shoes because I don’t know who could walk in them.
4. A guest recently commented on her pointy toed stilettos and she explained that she only wore them for sitting.
5. In three years of blogging I can only remember ever getting two word verification codes that were actually real words. But some of these are so close that I think they beg for definitions: TERPOT, HARKATIC, GESSING, MIL, SPENCADE.
6. And is it any wonder that I kept calling the Cirque du Soleil show “Kooza,” Kazoo?
7. I recently saw a woman standing on the corner of our one traffic light in town and waving. For a second I thought she was hailing a cab.
8. But you can’t get Chinese Take-out, a long arm stapler, or a cab in Floyd.
9. Last Christmas I gave my son Josh a box of Chinese Cookies as a gift just so we could read the fortunes and because we both like to use them in our collages. The last fortune I got in a cookie was a smart ass one that said: Your sweetheart may be too beautiful for words for not for arguing.
10. My souvenir from the Cirque du Soleil is a handful of colored tissue confetti that was shot out of a cannon at the audience under a spotlight beam. I collected some for making collage.
11. There’s a new chick in town, at least new to me. Her name is NETCHICK and she’s taken over the Blogger’s Weekend Meet & Greet now that Michele, who I once called the fairy godmother of blogging, has retired.
12. I watched the whole of these two videos of Carrie Fisher talking about her new book Wishful Drinking on the Today Show. She’s quick and very funny but that’s not the main reason I was watching. I got hooked in because she looked like she had no legs and I kept staring and struggling to see where they were.
13. So don’t forget to think about what Scrooge’s ghost said: mankind is your business. It’s also mine.
Thursday headquarters is here. My other 13’s are here. View more 13 Thursday’s here. #163

My TT Forbidden Fruit is up.

Santa Maria?? Thanks funny:) Happy TT.
December 10th, 2008 10:57 pm
Fun list. I still sign one gift from Santa. My 13 year old says she is still leaving out cookies for Santa…. just in case LOL
Happy Holidays!

Ok, this is definitely spooky! About 5 minutes before reading your TT I was talking about A Christmas Carol and I quoted that line “Mankind is your business!” out loud. Although, I thought it was Marley’s ghost who said, or rather shouted, that line in the face of Scrooge’s disbelief.

I’ve never done #1, but my husband likes to. I just roll my eyes. Thanks for the random TT – it was very interesting.
Happy TT!

LOL! Loved what you said about Irish time! And I definitely agree about only wearing stilettos for sitting. I don’t wear high heels in general, only when the occasion calls for dressy shoes, and only if I know I won’t be walking or standing much.

none of our “santa” gifts were wrapped. we opened gifts from our parents and relatives on christmas eve and then went to bed. santa came in the middle of the night and left our toys and clothes and games, etc., all around the tree. it was thrilling to wake and find all the loot sitting around the tree. we believed in santa until we were about 10 years old – it was wayyy too risky to stop!

I have always avoided pronouncing Cirque de….. Want to watch that circus? I’m a chicken!
December 11th, 2008 5:35 am
Great 13! Leave it to you to wonder about the “o’clock”…not that you bring it up, I have no idea and will have to research!
December 11th, 2008 6:45 am
Great TT, as always. I still sign “Santa” on one or two of my husband’s presents. Santa should come see everyone, after all.
December 11th, 2008 6:58 am
I used to sign packages Santa also, I wonder if we were fooling anyone? Thanks for the reminder from Scrooge, great 13!
December 11th, 2008 7:02 am
I think we all signed the packages Santa and I still do, only I don’t change my handwriting.
I think Carrie Fisher looks like Mama Cass or someone else famous, but I can not pinpoint it…..oh I know Margot Kidderas she aged.
December 11th, 2008 7:57 am
I couldn’t stop watching the Carrie Fisher interviews because she didn’t look like Carrie Fisher. I thought it was Liza Minelli!
December 11th, 2008 8:27 am
Hah! Funny list. These shoes are made for sitting and that’s just what they’ll do. She probably paid enough for them to fund a small third world country for a year.
December 11th, 2008 8:30 am
Would love to see my son’s face if he gets a gift signed Santa Maria, lol !

I do love your lists. Coming to visit your blog is like venturing into a wonderful world.
I’ve missed so much – how did your garden turn out this year? The baby is growing so very fast.

🙂 Thanks so much for highlighting the transfer of the Meet n’ Greet over to “This Chick’s Life” — I’m so thrilled to host it for everyone to enjoy and find new & fun blogs with. I can’t believe we haven’t bumped into each other during the years I was playing along with Michele!
Oh, and GREAT 13 list… 🙂 Made me smile! See you over at my site this weekend, I hope! Have a great Thursday!

I used to sign the gifts I gave as Santa as “Terri Claus” – then our whole family got into the act – “Texas Santa”, “Too Claus for Words”, “Santa Daddy” – even the dogs got into the act with “Santa Paws” – my God, we were a Santa loving and hokey family, lol.
I’m into Christmas a bit with mine too – just went down a food road with 13 Things To Do With That Stupid Fruitcake You Just Got
Happy TT

I always play and try to make sense of the word verifications!
Thanks for visiting my TT.

Hi. Loved the list, especially No. 13. More people should remember that.
Netchick sent me over to say hi!

Michele Retired??????????? OY OY OY! I cannot believe it!
And BETIE PAGE Died! Oh Dear.
I read Carrie Fishers book about a week ago, It is an easy read…Maybe it took me an hour?? It is very funny and quite penetrating, too….
I TOO saw that show where she had no legs….HELLO????
It was kind of weird, wasn’t it? Or is it me??
I DO like her Honesty…and she is incredibly talented. I just find it an amazing phenomenon that she can get her book published, but many many many MANY others–As witty and as smart, cannot! That is what “Celebrity” brings to you….! And she is a “celebrity”…..! Well, Bless Her!

My mom used to sign presents as pets. Now I had some groovy pets in my growing-up years, but what are the chances that they somehow escaped the house and went Christmas shopping???
December 14th, 2008 7:14 pm
When I was growing up, the gift we got from Santa (only one special one) never had a tag actually, because it was set out ready to play with..never wrapped. Like Santa wanted us to marvel at it just out and waiting for us to loveingly play with it. I continued the tradition with my own daughter. We also, always opened our gifts at the strike of midnight, xmas eve. As kids we were put to bed early, but woken up at midnight…usually up till the wee hours, to all sleep in late xmas morning.
I love hearing about the different traditions of others…

How did I miss you on Thursday! You’re one of my joys 🙂
My Mom always did that…I continue the tradition when I buy stuff for Dad to give my brother.
I grabbed some colored tissue confetti from Cirque du Soleil’s show, Love, too 🙂
