13: I Brake for Bears

1. Listening to my friends Joel and Bob play Bowie’s ‘Major Tom to Ground Control’ at the Buffalo Mt. Brewery, I shouted out “Tommy can you hear me?”
2. They got my reference, which always thrills me because the kids who bag my groceries at Slaughters don’t get my vanity license plate reference to Let it B and some don’t even know who The Beatles were.

3. Marshall is open for business – NC Governor Josh Stein visited Marshall for the second time since Hurricane Helene wrecked the town. My son Josh Copus, owner of the Old Marshall Jail Hotel and restaurant, posted a clip of the visit and wrote “Love Governor Josh Stein. Thanks for caring Governor Stein. Watch HERE. Apparently hugging governors is my move!” Stein wasn’t the first governor that Josh hugged. Gov. Roy Cooper visited the jail hotel right after the flood in 2024.

4. Virginia is for Morgan Wade Lovers HERE.
5. That time that Morgan Wade and her band stayed at the Old Marshall Jail HERE.

6. Best photo of the week.
7. Filling in the “race” box on a form, I want to write “freckled.”
8. Commented to a friend on Facebook who liked a one of my photos: How do I like your like?
9. I Feel Like Dancing Reggae Tonight.
10. Katherine’s and my scheduled duo reading at the Little River Poetry Festival on Friday (2 pm) is called Ars Poetica, which means ‘the art of poetry’ and is based on the poem about writing poems by the 19 BC Roman poet Horace. We will be sharing our about poems and the practice of writing with titles like Do I Speak Muse?, When We Wait More Than We Write, A Verb I Can Live With, Timing, The Worth of Words and When You Love Your Poems. – More HERE.
11. I hunker down with pen in hand / imagining that I’ll see poetry / the way I see hidden pictures in 3D art / when I take my gaze off the obvious / when I trust that a poem already exists / just below the surface / and let myself fall into it… Read Poemwork in its entirety HERE.
12. A great work of art is like a dream; for all its apparent obviousness it does not explain itself and is never unequivocal. A dream never says: “You ought,” or: “This is the truth.” It presents an image in much the same way as nature allows a plant to grow, and we must draw our own conclusions.” Carl Jung

13. Give someone you love a bear hug today.

Oh yes, always draw your own conclusions. It’s best that way.
For every kiddo that’s unfamiliar with The Beatles, there’s another who has vast knowledge of a subgenre we’ve never heard of. It’s fascinating what people enjoy.

Bear hugs are necessary for sustained lovability.
